The results of the annual competition for the Russian academy of sciences medals held among young RAS and other organizations’ researchers and students of Russian higher educational institutions have been announced.

Ekaterina A. Ponomarenko was awarded a medal for her research in the field of general biology «Study of larval development in rhizocephalon families Sacculinidae (Cirripedia: Rhizocephala): taxonomic and phylogenetic aspects». Ekaterina is the student of second-year of a magistracy of Academy of ecology, marine biology and biotechnology of FESU. She became the fourth student of Academy, whose work has been awarded such honorable and high award! In competition of the Russian Academy of Science of 2003 year was won by Jury Shkryl, in 2004 - Kirill Vinnikov, in 2005 - Vyacheslav Dyachuk.

We’re happy to congratulate Ekaterina and wish her future success and new victories!!!

We hope that our students’ works will win further in such significant competitions!!!

The seminar about international distance Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) will takes place at January, 16 in conference hall of Institute of Marine Biology. During a meeting will be submitted the «CoastLearn» program.

CoastLearn is a distance Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) vocational training package that makes extensive use of the electronic media. The package is tailored to the training and technical needs of countries in transition, and aims to target coastal managers and planners working at local, sub-national, and national levels. The secondary target groups are universities and NGOs. It is an on-line, free of charge, flexible training tool .

The results of the annual competition for the RAS medals held among young RAS and other organizations’ researchers and students of higher educational institutions (Russian Federation), have been announced.

 Vyacheslav Alexeyevich Dyachuk was awarded a medal for his work in the field of general biology "Contractile proteins expression during ontogenesis and myogenetic cell differentiation in marine invertebrates in vitro".

We congratulate Vyacheslav and wish him future success and new victories!

A scientific and educational expedition took place on the PIBOC FEB RAS Marine experimental station from January 20 till 27. 11 second-grade students of the bioorganic chemistry and biotechnology faculty took part in it. The program included lectures on lipidology, experimental work on lipid extraction from marine invertebrates of Troitsa bay and studying of the thin-layer chromatography as a lipid sectioning method. Lectures on biology and biochemistry, delivered in English and a student’s presentation on memory problems in Russian and English also took place. During the trip, participants got the first experience of working with biological objects, became friends and had a rest! The expedition began a new step in the work of the station. It has shown, that it is possible to work there in winter. The guys were grateful to Victor Evgenyevich Vaskovsky, who organized and carried out this expedition.

IX Young Investigators School-conference on Actual Problems of Chemistry and Biology was held on the PIBOC Marine experimental station with support of the REC “Marine Biota” from September 16 till September 23. The school included lectures of most authoritative scientists in the field of Life Science, special interest groups sessions and presentations made by the participants. The PIBOC director, academician V.A.Stonik, corresponding member of RAS A.V. Adrianov, professor O.L. Serov and other authoritative researchers from Vladivostok, Moscow, Novosibirsk and Blagoveschensk delivered lectures. Professor V.D. Smirnov’s lecture about RBRF (Russian Basic Research Foundation) work was of great interest for the audience. I.K. Razumova, a NEICON (National Electronic and Information Consortium) representative, and E.K. Povesma of CSL FEB RAS (Central Scientific Library of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Science), told about electronic means of scientific information. T.A. Terekhova acquainted the audience with prospects of CRDF, which has recently celebrated decade of working in Russia.

The school work will undoubtedly help its participants to understand problems of the development of Life Science better. It will also facilitate development of research works in this field in the Far Eastern region of Russia.

A more detailed review of the school work, illustrated with pictures of its participants, will be placed on the REC site soon.

The Fifth PAN-REC conference took place on June 2-3 in the Mining Institute of St.Petersburg and was hosted by REC-015. About 200 representatives from 16 RECs, RF Ministry of Science and Education, Russian Academy of Sciences, Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF), the MacArthur Foundation and other organizations and foundations took part in it.

A wide circle of questions, connected with Program development up to year 2010 was discussed during the conference. Also there was made an analysis of dynamics of the program purposes, basic and applied research influence on educational process in Russian high school and 16 RECs’, founded within the frames of the program, influence on universities’ infrastructures and their interaction with regions.

The results of REC research activities were also discussed. Our Centre was represented presentations of REC Director V.I. Vysotskyii and young investigators – Kirill Vinnikov and Ekaterina Ponomarenko – by the way, it is important to notice that their reports were made in English. Questions of technology transfer and research management in universities were considered too.

• A “Basic Research and Higher Education” program competition. The REC “Marine Biota” invites young investigators (candidates of science) to take part in a competition for providing grants to young Russian scientists, who had obtained candidate’s degree no more than 6 years before beginning working at the project (January 1, 2006). The competition is sponsored by Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) and RF Ministry of Science and Education. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2005.

• Federal Agency on Science and Innovations (www.fasi.gov.ru) announces new competitions (2005-2006) within the frames of the Federal Special Research and Technical Development Program (FSRTDP) “Research and innovations in the priority directions of research and technical development”, including the priority direction “Infrastructure development” (XVII turn). The 1.11 direction in the priority field is “Development of the system of young scientists’ and teachers’ training in large research and education centers (including foreign ones) and participation in conferences, symposiums, seminars and schools (including those taking place abroad)”.
